The Democratic Underground's Reaction To Saddam's Capture
Unfortunately, the Democratic Underground's moderators have been deleting some of the crazier and/or more offensive posts on the DU of late. Of course, that makes perfect sense given that so many people on the right have been pointing out what a bunch of whack jobs they are. But don't worry, I was still able to pull a few gold plated cashews out of the DU nut mine for your amusement.

Magic Rat: "well...I guess I'm "supposed" to feel good about (Saddam being captured) Because he is a "brutal dictator" who "killed thousands of his own people."

But he was also a guy who posed no threat to us. And a guy who managed to keep a hostile area of the world relatively sedate (albeith through brutal tactics). And a guy who was a secular muslim leader instead of a hardcore fundamentalist.

But I think in cold, crass political terms. I think it's good for Bush so I think it's bad for me. So I'm not happy, and I don't care if it's politically incorrect to say so."

joeybee12: "My gut reaction was "Sh*t"--good news for Dumbo And speaking of politically incorrect, I'm glad it happened now instead of next October!"

neebob: "My reaction

I am: (1) surprised Saddam is still alive, (2) ashamed that the U.S. supported him for years, (3) sad about all the death and destruction, (4) sickened by the hypocrisy and lies, (5) angry at the stupidity of what I'm hearing on TV right now the people who are sucking it up, and (6) disgusted at the prospect of the trial and how it will be used.

In sum, I hate George Bush more than I hated him yesterday.

FXDS: "I agree with another poster. I think they have had Saddam locked up for several months. The capture of Osama will also be front page news around October 2004! There is nothing that this bunch of thugs won't do to hold on to power!"

bushwentawol: "The capture of Saddam is all fine and good, but does how does this help someone facing a bleak Christmas because they lost their job? How does this help someone with an illness who just lost their insurance coverage? How does this help someone who's underemployed, working several jobs and struggling to pay the mortgage? It just don't make me any money."

JailBush: "Saddam Hussein vs Osama bin Laden vs George W. Bush

Don't forget the amazing similarities and differences between the world's three most notorious terrorists.

George W. Bush and Osama bin Laden are both religious fanatics; Osama reputedly hates Hussein because he is not particularly religious.

George Bush and Saddam Hussein are widely hated at home, and there are many Iraqis and Americans who would gladly turn them in. In contract, Osama bin Laden is widely revered as a hero. I saw some talking head on TV just a few minutes ago who insisted that no one will ever turn in Osama bin Laden - even for a million-dollar reward. It's a matter of honor.

Osama bin Laden speaks Arabic and English. I believe Saddam Hussein speaks English, too; I could be mistaken. George W. Bush hasn't even mastered English.

Osama bin Laden and George H.W. Bush are both very close to the bin Laden family.

Saddam Hussein and George W. Bush both appreciate torture; I'm not sure about Osama.

I doubt that Osama bin Laden cares much about the environment, but Saddam Hussein ravaged Iraq's famous swamps. George Bush's anti-environmental policies are even more destructive.

George W. Bush is by far the biggest coward of the three. No matter how much they hate them, no intelligent person would declare Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden cowards.

Osama bin Laden fights for a cause. George Bush and Saddam Hussein wage war to keep themselves in power. Bush also profits from war.

Osama and Bush were born into wealthy families; I'm not sure about Saddam.

George W. Bush is by far the greater menace to the United States and the world at large.

Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden are both former U.S. allies. George Bush has never been an ally.

Who was involved with the Attack on America? Saddam Hussein almost certainly wasn't, but Osama bin laden and George W. Bush are both key suspects.

George Bush and Osama bin Laden are both very secretive, spending much of their time in hiding. The same is probably generally true for Saddam Hussein."

They don't seem very happy that Saddam got caught, do they?

The Democratic Underground is not a very intelligent website, IMO. Any idea who runs it?

Answer to my own question:

About Democratic Underground, LLC

Democratic Underground (DU) was founded on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2001, to protest the illegitimate presidency of George W. Bush and to provide a resource for the exchange and dissemination of liberal and progressive ideas. Since then, DU has become one of the premier left-wing websites on the Internet, publishing original content six days a week, and hosting one of the Web's most active left-wing discussion boards.

We welcome Democrats of all stripes, along with other progressives who will work with us to achieve our shared goals. While the vast majority of our visitors are Democrats, this web site is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, nor do we claim to speak for the party as a whole.

Democratic Underground would not be possible without the participation of like-minded individuals from across the country and, indeed, from around the world. The content for the site is provided by people who feel that their views are not represented by the conservative "mainstream" media in the U.S. We accept article submissions from those on the left who wish to write, so that DU represents a variety of progressive viewpoints. We have a particular appreciation for satire and humor.

Visitors may also participate in our discussion forums, which have become one of the most popular places on the Web for members of the political left to share ideas and discuss the issues.

This website exists so our members and guests are assured that there are many others across the country who share their outrage at the unilateral, arrogant, and extreme right-wing approach taken by George W. Bush and his team, the conservative Republicans in Congress, and the five conservative partisans on the Supreme Court. We address the right in harsh terms, and we fully intend to make the word "conservative" absolutely radioactive. In that spirit, DU has already gained countrywide notoriety as the originator of the weekly Top Ten Conservative Idiots list, which is published (almost) every Monday.

Democratic Underground gets lots of visitors, but we do not make much money from our site. T-shirt sales and donations do not completely cover our out-of-pocket expenses, which are increasing. We therefore invite you to make a contribution to our efforts in whatever amount you can afford. Democratic Underground is legally a for-profit organization, therefore, you won't get a tax deduction for your contribution. However, you will get the satisfaction of knowing that as long as there are conservative idiots, Democratic Underground will be here to hold them accountable (and maybe even make fun of them).

pssst ... the Democratic Party isn't really all that left-wing ... horrid website. (although their Top-Ten Conservative Idiots list is kinda funny.)

Xpanda,

You and I may find Democratic Underground to be a very poor example of the left wing, but they have nearly 50,000 subscribers. And they do seem to represent a growing number of left wingers in terms of their political anger and bizarre behavior. Hell, there's at least a half dozen posters here who would feel right at home at this site. Below is another gem from that site. They took it down soon after because they don't want mainstream people to see how hideous their posters really are, but columnist Andrew Sullivan copied it before it was deleted.

FROM THE 'DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND': A new low for the far left: a post titled, "Why I Hope the Bloodshed Continues in Iraq." I kid you not.

DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND DECIDES TO EDIT: Hmmm. After I linked to a truly hideous posting celebrating bloodshed in Iraq, they take the page down. I should have copied the page. First CBS. Now DU. Shine a light on them and they scram.

THE POST: Here's what Democratic Underground didn't want you to see:

I Hope the Bloodshed Continues in Iraq
Well, that should bring the bats out of the attic with fangs dripping. I won't be hypocritcal. It is politically correct, particularly in any Dem discussion to hope and pray and feel for our troops and scream "bring them back now". I'm fighting something bigger.
I'm a 58 year old broad and I can tell you that what is going on in our country isn't the usual ebb and flow of politics where one party is in power and then another; where the economy goes through ups and downs.......yawn, yawn--just wait a bit and things will turn out peachy keen. That stupid la-la land is over.
I realize that not every GI Joe was 100peeercent behind Prseeedent Booosh going into this war; but I do know that that is what an overwhelming number of them and their famlies screamed in the face of protesters who were trying to protect these kids. Well, there is more than one way to be "dead" for your country. They are not only not accompishing squat in Iraq, they are doing crap nothing for the safety, defense of the US of A over there directly. But "indirectly" they are doing a lot.
The only way to get rid of this slime bag WASP-Mafia, oil barron ridden cartel of a government, this assault on Americans and anything one could laughingly call "a democracy", relies heavily on what a shit hole Iraq turns into. They need to die so that we can be free. Soldiers usually did that directly--i.e., fight those invading and harming a country. This time they need to die in defense of a lie from a lying adminstration to show these ignorant, dumb Americans that Bush is incompetent. They need to die so that Americans get rid of this deadly scum. It is obscene, Barbie Bush, how other sons (of much nobler blood) have to die to save us from your Rosemary's Baby spawn and his ungodly cohorts.

I can't say too much bad about Democratic Underground because they are the ones that tipped me off to Howard Dean. I got him in March at 25-1 to win the Dem nomination so I owe them a bit.

Sad group of characters over there though...makes me wonder why some even bother getting out of bed in the morning.
